AV beats

During spring 2023 I developed a prototype of an audiovisual synthesizer which creates sound and visuals by using photoacoustic and stroboscopic principles. The photoacoustic effect is a process where light is transformed to sound by using a photosensitive material. The photoacoustic effect makes it possible to work with the sound visually – the frequency of the light movement is the same as the frequencies we hear. The sound is generated in the visual output of the instrument – multiple solar panels are used to transform the moving shadows and pulsating lights into a sound signal. During my performance I am catching photons in space and turning them into various noises, tones, beats; sculpting the sounds with my hand movements in real time.

The audiovisual experience allows the audience to perceive electric media signals (light and sound) directly, in their most raw form. It also invites the audience to explore the peculiarities of our perception, demonstrating how different energies are transforming and cooperating in our environment and how the same signal can be both light and sound.
